If You have Read 2 of my other blog posts, "Validate Your Business Idea To Earn Money Online” and “How To Name A Business In 5 Steps”, your hopefully feel you have a solid foundation to start your business, and your next question might be how to earn money online…. I can't blame you for being motivated, and even there are both cheap and fast ways to make money online, I see most (but not all) as temporary solutions that will change and/or disappear over time. Therefore I prefer a solid long-term foundation, that will build you a steady business.
Before we go into different strategies in future blog post how to earn money online, and build a solid business, there are some basic words and principles you need to know, no matter if you sell flowers, cars, or software – simply because, if you understand the logic behind the words and principles, it will ease your way to success no matter what you currently sell or would like to sell online.
Warning: These words and principles are used over and over again, so if you have been a marketer for a while, this blog post might not be for you. However, I would have wished when I started online, that I had understood basic principles across different niches, as it would have improved my learning curve, and saved me a lot of frustrations.
Therefore I would give every reader the opportunity to learn about the basic within online marketing before I start blogging about the more advanced stuff. Again I have to warn you…a lot of you will find it annoying how detailed and slow speaking I am in some of the video walkthroughs. My best advice if you are new within the below terms – deal with it! Get these words and principles “under your skin”, and understand it in details. It is OK to be annoyed of my slow walk-through, but you will thank me months and years from now if you get the full understanding, not just what below words means, but how you actually get it all working together.
Please notice if I covered all words and principles the blog post will turn into a book – therefore I have only chosen a few of the most used words, and ensured a currently discounted ”Internet Marketing Dictionary”, for further background information.
Starting A New Online Business And Want To Earn Money Online – Understand The Following
Hosting can be translated to ”providing the equipment and services that are required to display websites”. Hosting also involves maintaining files, offer ”load speed” backup and a security for your website.
As hosting is the technical foundation for your website, you need to find a reliable host. Hosting packages are available for very reasonable rates. Do research based on customer service and quality of technical service before choosing a hosting company based only on price.
I have tried different solutions, and found often a lot of different things are not possible or included in the cheap hosting packages, but you also often don't need a premium package to start your business. Whatever hosting provider you choose, make sure they have a great support, and you can scale your solution over time, as you don't want to get stuck in your business just because of a slow support, or you can't upgrade your solution with new features when needed. I personally recommend ”SiteRubix” as a free to start with integrated part of a membership that also includes a branded company e-mail solution, premium coaching, training and SEO tools. Yes, you can get both cheaper and more expensive solutions – I have tried both. Often I have seen other providers with limited features, slow support and a huge price increase after the first year. I have NEVER seen so fast and solid support as in the solution I suggest. You often get help within minutes! You should check out these solutions, if you either want 1-2 free websites and it is ok your website name will be ‘yourwebsitename.siterubix.com' or you want a value for money offer with premium training, coaching, SEO, your own personal branded e-mail and your tailored website name like ‘yourwebsitename.com'
A frequently updated website with reverse-chronological “posts” or, a short opinion, news or gossip updates (records presented backward chronological order, using the latest entry on the top. The records are created much like a journal or diary ). The post frequently have key words and categories (generally known as tags) associated with them. The posts often encourage people to leave comments to build up dialogues and engagements. Although blogs were initially used just like a personal journal on everyday occasions, they've developed right into a multipurpose tool. Today internet marketers use their blogs to provide valuable information to their audience, build an e-mail list of subscribers, with whom they are able to sell their items and services).
A Blog can be your whole website or part of your website. However, not all websites are blogs.
How to write a blog post correctly according to SEO and marketing people can turn into a science. Even I recommend to learn more about how to write blog posts ”correctly”, always remember from an overall success-perspective, it is better to take imperfect action than holding yourself back, until your master everything to perfection.
A blog needs to be built on a technical platform that takes care of tech stuff behind the scene and provide you with features you can enable or disable for your blog. A lot of different platforms/CMS's to build your website or blog exist. Some of the platforms for small business are Wix, Drupal, Magento, WordPress, Joomla Squarespace. For several reasons I like most others recommend you use WordPress. WordPress is a free blogging platform. Its many free themes, free plug-ins, user-friendly capabilities and community features make it the platform I recommend. It also seems most software made for your business, at least make a WordPress plugin, when a plugin is made. For your information, a WordPress ‘theme' is so to say another foundation for your blog. It will give your blog specific possibilities and limitations especially when it comes to layout. When it comes to plugins – it's a bit like your smartphone and apps. If we imagine your blog or website is your phone, the plugins are a bit like ‘apps' that gives you specific features/enhancements.
Even I recommend WordPress there is one thing I HATE about it! The built in editor is so OLD FASHION, and you need to be an expert in HTML coding if you want to create good looking pages – and it will take you a lot of time! Luckily there is another solution! Here at ‘Start Business Better' we as thousands of other businesses use ‘Thrive Content Builder' to create professional looking pages and post with a lot more speed and ease than WordPress can offer alone. Thrive Content Builder is a plugin you enable and use inside WordPress simply by pushing a button. Thrive Content Builder also comes with built-in features to build landing pages / Lead Capture pages (more info below) and light boxes (an overlay box that pop-up when a visitor do something predefined e.g. click a specific place/link on your page. The ‘lightbox' can prompt users for their contact information, show information, pictures, videos etc. )
Email List (This Is Closely Related To ‘Lead Pages' & ‘Opt-In' Described Below)
As you can't sell to people you can't contact, you don't know if strangers are interested in your products, and it is expensive and time-consuming to advertise to an ”untested audience”, you will over and over again hear people saying ”The money is in your list” – and they are right.
Building a list people, including their contact information, will ensure you a base of returning and potential future customers, who already have shown interest in what you are offering, and therefore are more likely to hear you out, when you want to engage with your audience.
Many people forget to consider what will happen if your Facebook page or Youtube page get suspended – or what if your web page breaks down……unfortunately it is easy to loose your valuable assets online. However if you have your e-mail list, you can communicate and most often sell your products not matter what happens.
I can't stress enough your Website/Blog (and thereby your hosting as foundation) is the most important in you business together with your e-mail list (build with help from your autoresponder).
There are several ways to build an e-mail list or a list you can send notifications to (e.g. push notifications, Facebook notifications etc). The most common way to build an e-mail list is letting your prospects opt-in through an email opt-in form. They type in their name and contact information and are added to your email list. This gives you the opportunity to follow up and communicate with all the people on your list automatically whenever you choose. Often people don't want to give too much of their information or to give their information without anything in return. Therefore consider not to ask about too much info (often just ask for their name and e-mail), and give them a free or cheap bonus in return.
One last note: Please always treat your list with respect. Keep peoples information private and don't spam your list. Business is about providing value and building up trust…..nobody wants to buy from you, if they don't see value in what you offer, and nobody will do business with people they don't trust.
An autoresponder is an automatic e-mail response program that automatically sends an e-mail message at a set time or in a reaction to an action taken by a visitor on your page. For instance, when a visitor to your web page requests information by sending you an email or visiting a link, your autoresponder may automatically reply with a pre-determined email message. It is possible to set up autoresponders to send out sales information, letters, follow-up inquiries or notices.
Among the most typical uses for autoresponders is to come up with a learning ”course” to share with and educate potential customers about the advantages of a business or product.
Autoresponders also allow marketers to effortlessly follow up with their subscribers from time to time. An example of a very good autoresponder service to use is Aweber.
Aweber manages online opt-in email newsletters, follow-up, and email deliverability services for business owners
Push messages/notifications is a new way to build your e-mail list. The technology has similar features to an email autoresponder, but instead of sending emails you can send messages straight to a prospect’s computer desktop and android device. The prospect doesn’t even have to be on their browser or your website to receive them. You can build push notification list, and just like with an email list, you can then promote your offers to that list.
But How does a Push Notification look like? …You probably already have seen them e.g. through Facebook, else just visit Facebook in Chrome, Safari or Firefox and enable notifications. You will then see notifications like below.
In my world, you NEED both an autoresponder and to be able to send push messages, if you driving a serious online business. Studies shows Push Messages get clicked at more than 80% of the time, while marketing e-mails are often open less than 10%. Imagine how many extra eyeballs a Push Message can put on your offer and how that might increase your sale!
Often people don't sign-up to your newsletter etc., as they either don't want to waste a few seconds to fill out their information, or they don't trust you well enough to give you their contact information. In other situations they might provide you with fake contact information, to get free stuff from you, as you often will offer them to exchange their contact information with free ebooks, guides, infographics or something else, as it will grow your e-mail list, and thereby potentially your sale.
Talking in broad terms the cool thing about push messages are especially two things. 1. People can subscribe to your messages with a few clicks and without giving their e-mail away. You can send people messages that will show up, where they use their time online, and your message can stay visible until the user clicks on it, instead of drowning between hundreds of e-mails in a users secondary mailbox.
Push Messages will cuts through distraction and enables instant messaging and response. I strongly believe people would get way more traffic and sales if they use push notifications. In general Message broadcast is the future of direct marketing, and with Push notifications showing on top of all opens apps, there is no better technology to instantly cut through distractions, and have your marketing message seen.
Even the technology is fairly new for small business owners, you will without a doubt see a lot of people offering these “push messages services”, as everybody agrees this is a great new thing for most business owners, and thereby some people dream about making ‘easy money' on these services.
Like for hosting and autoresponders, I strongly recommend you only use a big serious provider, as you want as many features integrated as possible, but more importantly, you want your new subscribers to trust the technology and sign-up to your messages. Also, you want a provider who has a strong backup and security around the list of subscribers you build………imagine to lose a list of thousands of subscribers…….
(Lead) Capture Pages also called ”Squeeze pages” or ”Splash pages”
These pages purpose is to collect people's contact information, so you can build your e-mail list. Your Lead Capture Page is a webpage or form on a website that can be promoted through any method of marketing.
Most often visitors are persuaded to enter their contact information (often just name and email) with the promise of a free report or product.
Here at ‘Start Business Better' use a combined tool called ‘Thrive Content Builder' to create professional looking landing pages, lead pages, web pages, sales pages, blog posts etc. All pages with different purposes, but with the need to look professional, and with all kind of built in features as e.g. lightboxes. In other words – whenever we need to build any kind of page ‘Thrive Content Builder' is our favorite tool.
When you ”opt in” to a mailing list through an ‘Optin', you give someone your email address, usually by entering it into a web form. By opting-in, you give them permission to add you to their e-mail list and send you emails, usually in the form of a newsletter. You may also fill out an opt-in form in order to be entered into a contest, or to receive a free Ebook, cheatsheet, infographic or whitepaper.
(Sales) Funnel And OTO/Upsells
A sales funnel is basically the buying process that companies lead customers through when purchasing products. A traditional sales funnel is often divided into the seven steps: Awareness Phase, Interest Phase, Evaluation Phase, Decision Phase, Purchase Phase, Reevaluation Phase and a Reevaluation Phase. Different methods and tactics exist to optimize each step.
However, a different and more simple variation exist of sales funnels, especially as more of the steps can happen almost simultaneously.
Read Magnet, Front Offer, Primary offer/OTO 1/Upsell 1, and OTO 2/Upsell 2 etc. etc.
The ”Read Magnet” Is just a fancy word for your Lead Magnet…..it is something you promote and often offer for free, to get attention from your audience. It would often be a blog post (therefore the unofficial term ‘Read Magnet'), but could also be a ‘Giveaway' (a free ebook or a cheat sheet etc etc.).
Whatever you try to sell your customer, it should be related to your read/lead magnet. In general, a blog post often describes a problem and a solution to a problem your audience can relate to, and the ‘Front Offer' product you try to sell will solve the described problem, but often not completely. Often you will see your Primary offer also called OTO 1 or Upsell one, will be required to take full advantage of what you offer. However always stay ethical and make sure you front offer can work on its own without the customer needs to buy more.
The OTO's/Upsells thereafter will often be ”luxury add-ons” or just related products, that might make you front offer even more beneficial.
In other words, an Upsell is An attempt to sell something more, after a sale has already been made. Sometimes the upsell occurs before a payment is made,
and sometimes after. It may be an upsell for a “deluxe” version of the product, or for a different (but probably related) product. An upsell is also called an OTO.
As a last note, you should know also downsells exist. It is basically the opposite of an upsell, meaning the buyer is sent to a downgraded and discounted version of an offe, if the buyer clicked ”No thank you” to buy your primary offer or an upsell.
